Jade’s Transformation Into An Athlete With Triathlon Coaching From Efficient Endurance

Every massive transformation starts with a tiny, critical moment. It is rarely a loud announcement. More often, it is a quiet admission, a moment of raw honesty when wanting to change finally feels better than staying put. For my client, Jade, that moment showed up in a text message.
“To be honest, I haven’t done a lot of training lately: motivation is low and I’m nursing a sore ankle… it might be worth starting from ground zero.”
This was not just a request for a training schedule. It was a call for a partnership. Jade, a successful event planner with a wild work schedule, was stuck. She had a huge goal, the Norfolk Superhero Challenge, a team endurance event, but the path to it was blocked by low motivation, nagging injuries, and the general chaos of her life.
This is her story. It is about more than just gym sessions and bike rides. It is how a foundation of trust, adaptive coaching, and a healthy dose of humour can help anyone crush their goals.
Juggling Life, Work, and a Pool That Kept Shrinking
From the start, the challenges were obvious. Jade’s journey was not going to be a neat line on a graph. It was going to happen in the real world, with all its beautiful unpredictability.
Here were the three big hurdles:
- The Motivation Gap: The first and biggest obstacle was internal. Jade knew she should train, but the spark just was not there. Her early messages to me showed a classic motivation problem, where the idea of starting felt more tiring than the actual training.
- The Time Squeeze: As an event planner, Jade’s life was a blur of travel, long hours and an unpredictable routine. Her schedule was the exact opposite of stable. We had to create a plan that could bend without breaking, fitting in trips to London, Stratford upon Avon, and even a three week trip to Bali.
- The Confidence Hurdles: Jade’s relationship with swimming was complicated. It was a source of serious frustration. “I’m actually starting to dread the swimming sessions,” she told me. “It’s just not that fun being shit at something.” This mental block was made worse by a logistical nightmare. We discovered fairly late in her training that her local pool was only 18 meters long, not 20… As she perfectly put it, “Who makes an 18m pool ffs.”
These challenges led to the biggest setback of all. Just weeks before the Superhero Challenge, the worst happened. A run club session ended with a badly injured ankle. “I’m annoyed that after 10 months of training I’ve fallen at the last hurdle,” she texted. The goal seemed to be slipping away.

Our Secret Sauce Was an Adaptive Partnership
A rigid plan would have failed almost immediately. Our solution was built on flexibility, constant communication, and a deep level of trust that let us adapt to any obstacle.
Here’s how we did it:
- Communication First: Our entire coaching relationship happened on WhatsApp. It was a non stop conversation. This allowed for instant changes, like swapping a run for a swim because a pool was closed or giving her a bodyweight workout she could do in a hotel room in Bali. It was about meeting her where she was (unfortunately not in Bali!).
- Building an Athlete Identity: From day one, I called Jade an athlete. When she pushed back, saying, “I’m not sure I’d use the word athlete,” my answer was simple: “Everyone is an athlete.” This was a deliberate strategy to reframe how she saw herself. We celebrated every single win, from a “solid day” of training to her impressive 20th female finish at a local race. This built a bank of proof that she was capable, strong, and resilient.
- Pivoting Under Pressure: The ankle injury was the final boss battle. Instead of giving up, we changed the goal. Running was off the table, but the Superhero Challenge was about more than just running. It was a team event where he and her partner had to go together. We moved all our focus to her upper body and core strength for the kayak and swim. The mission was always about finishing, not about her finish time. As she joked later, the injury was a blessing in disguise, the fitness she had built meant she could work her team mate hard enough that neither of them had the energy to push her ankle too hard on the run!
- Trust Beyond Training: The strength of our partnership was proven when it crossed into our personal lives. While I was planning my wedding from Australia, Jade, the professional event planner, jumped in. She offered venue advice and even gave my family a virtual tour of a venue! This was the ultimate proof of a relationship built on real, mutual trust.
From “Devastated” to “Buzzing”
The outcome of our year long journey was not just one result. It was a collection of victories, both measurable and emotional.
Jade did not just complete the Superhero Challenge, she owned it. Despite the injury, she and her partner had a “super fun” day. Her bike leg was incredibly strong, and she finished feeling empowered, not broken. The whole journey was captured in a video from the event (See video below!): Jade and her partner kayaking into a post. It was a moment of pure hilarity in the middle of a tough challenge.
But that was just one peak. Along the way, she also:
- Completed her first ever triathlon, admitting she “booked it after too much wine” but loved the experience.
- Finished the Blickling Half Marathon in under two hours, even though she was sick and had a chaotic work schedule.
- Transformed her mindset. The woman who started with “motivation is low” was now “buzzing” on race day and found that training had become “the highlight of my day.”

In her own words, from her Google review:
“Chris was recommended to me via my run club when I needed some coaching through an event way bigger than I’d ever taken on before. Working together for the best part of a year, Chris designed a plan that kept it interesting whilst secretly increasing my endurance to the point where the big event was not only doable but enjoyable! Chris understood work commitments knowing when to push and when to let me focus on other parts of my life. He is also a funny guy which helps! I’d recommend Chris if you need some accountability and a plan to get you where you need to be!”
Jade’s story is a powerful reminder that the path to our goals is never a straight line. It is messy, unpredictable, and full of obstacles. But with the right partner, a flexible plan, and the grit to adapt, you can overcome anything. You can cross a finish line you once thought was impossible.
